Orange rust staining on commercial wall panels, partly cleaned, in Charleston, SC

Rust & Battery-Acid Stain Removal
for Charleston Businesses

Downtown rust usually comes from iron, not irrigation. Railings, hinges, old anchors, window bars and HVAC brackets bleed onto brick, stucco and bluestone along King Street and around the Market. The staining is the easy part. The surface underneath is the hard part, because the wrong product lightens mortar or etches historic stone permanently.

Rust & Battery-Acid Stain Removal in Charleston: What Makes It Different Here

On the peninsula, nearly every stain sits on something old and porous. Rust streaks under a wrought iron rail on Upper King, orange runs below a brick sill, fertilizer staining on a courtyard patio behind a restaurant. Historic masonry does not forgive a heavy rust remover, so the work goes in small sections with the product and the runoff both controlled, and adjacent stone kept wet so nothing wanders. Battery burns show up too, mostly back of house: pallet jacks and floor scrubbers in hotel service corridors around Market and East Bay, and cart batteries at the tour operations off Morrison Drive. Access is the other constraint. Narrow sidewalks, delivery windows and pedestrians all day, which is why most downtown work happens early or overnight.

  • Historic brick, stucco and bluestone tested in a small area before any rust remover goes on.
  • Iron rail and sill runs on King Street treated in sections, with runoff kept controlled.
  • Hotel and restaurant back-of-house battery burns neutralized around delivery windows and foot traffic.

Areas we cover in Charleston: King Street retail, Upper King hospitality, Market / East Bay, Morrison Drive, Downtown office core.

Charleston Rust & Battery-Acid Stain Removal Questions

Our building is historic. Can rust be removed without damaging the brick and mortar?

That depends on the surface, which is why we test a small, low-visibility area first. Old lime mortar, soft brick and bluestone all react differently to rust removers. We work in sections, keep the surrounding masonry wet so nothing runs where it should not, and stop short of anything that would lighten your mortar joints.

King Street sidewalks are busy all day. How do you keep the work out of the way?

By not doing it at midday. Most peninsula work runs early morning or overnight, when the sidewalk is empty and deliveries are done. We stage a small footprint, keep the treated area contained and signed, and clear out before your doors open. Off-hours scheduling is normal for us downtown, not an exception.
